3막 2장 · 15행Friends, Romans, countrymen, lend me your ears.
I come to bury Caesar, not to praise him.
The evil that men do lives after them;
The good is oft interrèd with their bones.
So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was ambitious.
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answered it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest
(For Brutus is an honorable man;
So are they all, all honorable men),
Come I to speak in Caesar’s funeral.
He was my friend, faithful and just to me,
But Brutus says he was ambitious,
And Brutus is an honorable man.
우리말 뜻
벗들이여, 로마인들이여, 동포들이여, 내게 귀를 기울여 주시오. 나는 시저를 묻으러 왔을 뿐, 그를 기리러 온 것이 아니오. 사람이 저지른 악은 그가 떠난 뒤에도 살아남고, 선한 일은 흔히 그 뼈와 함께 묻히오. 시저의 경우도 그렇게 되게 두시오. 고결한 브루터스는 여러분에게 시저가 야심을 품었다고 말했소. 만일 그러했다면 그것은 통탄할 잘못이며, 시저는 그 값을 통탄스럽게 치렀소. 이 자리에서, 브루터스와 그 밖의 이들의 허락을 얻어 (브루터스는 명예로운 사람이며, 그들 모두가 그러하니, 모두 명예로운 사람들이오) 나는 시저의 장례에서 말하러 왔소. 그는 나의 벗이었고, 나에게 충실하고 공정했소. 그러나 브루터스는 그가 야심을 품었다고 말하오. 그리고 브루터스는 명예로운 사람이오.
