4막 1장 · 14행The quality of mercy is not strained.
It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven
Upon the place beneath. It is twice blest:
It blesseth him that gives and him that takes.
’Tis mightiest in the mightiest; it becomes
The thronèd monarch better than his crown.
His scepter shows the force of temporal power,
The attribute to awe and majesty
Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;
But mercy is above this sceptered sway.
It is enthronèd in the hearts of kings;
It is an attribute to God Himself;
And earthly power doth then show likest God’s

우리말 뜻
자비란 억지로 짜낼 수 있는 것이 아닙니다. 자비는 하늘에서 내리는 부드러운 비처럼 그 아래 땅으로 떨어집니다. 자비는 두 번 축복합니다. 주는 이를 축복하고, 받는 이를 축복합니다. 자비는 가장 강한 자에게서 가장 강하며, 왕좌에 앉은 군주에게는 그 왕관보다 더 잘 어울립니다. 왕의 홀(笏)은 세속의 권력이 지닌 힘을 보이고, 왕들에 대한 두려움과 경외가 깃든 위엄의 표식입니다. 그러나 자비는 그 홀의 지배보다 위에 있습니다. 자비는 왕들의 마음속에 왕좌를 두고 있으며, 신 그분의 속성입니다. 그리하여 지상의 권력은 자비가 정의를 다스릴 때 비로소 신의 권능을 가장 닮아 보입니다.
