For all the day they view things unrespected;
But when I sleep, in dreams they look on thee
And, darkly bright, are bright in dark directed.
Then thou whose shadow shadows doth make bright,
How would thy shadow’s form form happy show
To the clear day with thy much clearer light
When to unseeing eyes thy shade shines so!
How would, I say, mine eyes be blessèd made
By looking on thee in the living day,
When in dead night thy fair imperfect shade
Through heavy sleep on sightless eyes doth stay!
All days are nights to see till I see thee,
And nights bright days when dreams do show thee me.

눈을 가장 꼭 감을 때 나의 눈은 가장 잘 봅니다. 하루 내내 그 눈은 대수롭지 않은 것들만 보기 때문입니다. 그러나 내가 잠들면 꿈속에서 그 눈은 그대를 바라보고, 어둡게 빛나며 어둠 속에서 밝게 이끌립니다. 그대의 그림자가 다른 그림자들을 밝게 만드는 그대여, 보이지 않는 눈에도 그대의 그림자가 그토록 빛난다면, 그대의 훨씬 더 맑은 빛으로 그 그림자의 형상이 환한 낮에는 얼마나 기쁜 모습을 이룰까요. 죽은 듯한 밤에 그대의 아름답고 불완전한 그림자가 깊은 잠을 지나 보이지 않는 눈에 머무는데, 살아 있는 낮에 그대를 바라본다면 나의 눈은 얼마나 축복받을까요. 그대를 볼 때까지 모든 낮은 보는 일에 있어 밤이며, 꿈이 그대를 내게 보여줄 때 밤은 밝은 낮입니다.
